An AAU Basketball team in Virginia is sparking attention with social awareness and safe practicing measures as high school students continue to prepare for college.
Nova Venom, also known as Venom Mentality was started by Marchello Squirewell who’s been coaching for 15 years. Suqirewell told us he wanted to create an affordable league for players in Centreville, VA and a family atmosphere for the community to support.
“..I wanted to make it easier on families, so they didn’t have to go all the way across town to practice 2-3 days a week. I also wanted to make it affordable so that girls who may not have been able to join a super expensive program could have the chance to play and get great coaching. I wanted the players to have a program in their area they could be proud of,” Squirewell told us.

Nova Venom has two AAU teams and is looking at expanding age groups in the future.
In the midst of social distancing, Squirewell told us during workouts, he gives players hand sanitizer during every water break and keep them socially distant during drills. As an extra precaution, everyone brings their own basketball and wears a mask before and after our workouts. Since the risk of traveling and playing basketball indoors is too high, they chose not to participate in tournaments.

I spoke with a couple of members of @NovaVenomBball and they discussed how their team is more than basketball, its a sisterhood, and so much more.

A few members of the 17’s AAU Nova Venom basketball team spoke with Brian Waters about the academic, sports and life transition with our new age of social distancing.
Kaya Squirewell and Alex Agee told us on YouTube the team also brought awareness to social justice issues in 2020 by posting on social media, attending peaceful protests and prayer gatherings (with masks).
