When Christian Ross introduces herself, she doesn’t just mention being a real estate agent in Atlanta—she lights up when she talks about connection. As Founder & Chief Happiness Officer of HappyTalks, Ross is on a mission to address one of the most overlooked public health crises in America: loneliness among older adults.
According to the U.S. Surgeon General, loneliness can increase the risk of premature death by more than 60%, making it as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Meanwhile, studies from the National Institute on Aging show that seniors with strong social connections have 50% lower risk of dementia. For Ross, these statistics aren’t just numbers—they’re the reason she built a company that prioritizes people over technology.
HappyTalks offers personalized social care for elderly adults through live phone calls, handwritten notes, and quarterly gift boxes. Instead of outsourcing connection to robots or AI, Ross employs real people to make genuine, warm interactions. “I wanted to create something that reminded our seniors that they’re valued,” she says.
But HappyTalks is more than phone calls—it’s a lifeline. Families often face challenges when elderly loved ones age in place. Nearly 80% of homeowners over 65 stay in their homes rather than downsize, leading to both limited housing inventory and increased isolation. Ross sees both sides: the real estate challenge and the human challenge.
Her advice to seniors considering downsizing? Look at the whole financial picture. “It’s not just about selling a home—it’s about planning for the next 20 to 25 years,” she explains. That could mean moving closer to family, finding a supportive community, or considering a condo where day-to-day responsibilities are lighter.
HappyTalks is currently a private pay service, but Ross and her team are pushing toward Medicare approval, which could make social care more accessible for millions. In the meantime, she’s also working with angel investors to secure funding and expand.
The company is hosting intergenerational meetups in Atlanta, bridging seniors with younger generations. Ross believes these gatherings aren’t just feel-good events—they’re vital. Research from AARP shows that social isolation costs the U.S. healthcare system $6.7 billion annually due to increased hospitalizations. Preventing loneliness isn’t just moral—it’s economic.
Ross’s journey also intersects with a wider entrepreneurial conversation. During a recent setup with LookWeAreIncluded.com, she discussed how operations matter more than popularity—a reminder for founders to focus on execution, not just exposure. She also highlighted disparities Black tech founders face compared to white counterparts, citing the book Super Founders as an eye-opener.
As for caregivers, Ross is equally passionate. She stresses the importance of carving out time for self-care: “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” She encourages families to create a “happy list”—small joys to revisit when days get tough.
For Ross, HappyTalks is about more than a business—it’s about dignity. “Everyone deserves to feel seen, heard, and connected,” she says.
