A.J. Brown’s long-awaited debut with the New England Patriots didn’t go the way anyone in New England hoped. The star wide receiver, acquired in a blockbuster offseason trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, left Wednesday night’s season opener against the Seattle Seahawks early in the third quarter with a right ankle injury and did not return.
The Patriots went on to lose the game 13-10, a rough start to a season that was supposed to be defined by Brown’s arrival.
How the Injury Happened
The injury occurred on a third-down incompletion. Quarterback Drake Maye was targeting Brown down the field, with Seahawks cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett in tight coverage. As Brown reached for the low throw, Pritchett’s knee appeared to land on Brown’s ankle with the full force of his body weight. Brown immediately grabbed at his lower leg and stayed on the ground before eventually getting up with a visible limp.
He walked off the field under his own power, but spent an extended period being evaluated in the medical tent before heading to the locker room with the Patriots’ athletic training staff. The team initially labeled him questionable to return before officially ruling him out for the remainder of the game.
A Strong Start Before the Setback
Before the injury, Brown had flashed exactly the kind of impact New England traded for. He came back for an underthrown deep ball on a flea flicker and drew a defensive pass interference penalty that set the Patriots up at the two-yard line. On the very next play, rookie tight end Eli Raridon hauled in a touchdown — the only score of the first half for New England.
At the time he left the game, Brown had three catches for 26 yards on four targets, making him the Patriots’ leading receiver in his very first appearance in a New England uniform.
The Cost of the Trade
New England sent a 2028 first-round pick to Philadelphia back on June 1 to land Brown, making him the centerpiece of the team’s offensive overhaul this offseason. Notably, Brown and most of the Patriots’ other starters sat out the entire preseason, a decision that now looks even more significant given how the opener unfolded.
Brown enters his eighth NFL season with six 1,000-yard campaigns to his name, and New England was counting on him to be a true difference-maker for quarterback Drake Maye and the offense.
What’s Next for A.J. Brown
Following the loss, head coach Mike Vrabel said he did not have any additional information to share on Brown’s condition. The severity of the ankle injury remains unclear, and the Patriots will need to monitor his status closely throughout the week as they turn their attention to their next matchup.
For a team that just made one of the biggest wide receiver trades of the offseason, an extended absence for Brown would be a significant blow — both for New England’s passing attack and for a fan base that was eager to see what he and Drake Maye could build together.
This story will be updated as more information becomes available on A.J. Brown’s injury status.
