Nolan Wells, a recent Ocean Springs High School graduate and wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College, traveled to Horn Island with friends to celebrate Independence Day. Authorities say he was last seen on the island on the afternoon of July 4 after arriving by boat with a group of friends.
When Wells failed to return home, his mother reported him missing, prompting an extensive search involving local law enforcement, the U.S. Coast Guard, and volunteer rescue organizations. His body was discovered two days later near the island and later identified through dental records.
Friend’s Mother Addresses Online Speculation
As speculation spread across social media, Jackson County Judge Ashlee Cole—whose son was among those with Wells that day—released a public statement explaining that Nolan chose to remain on the island after the group’s boat reportedly experienced mechanical problems. According to her statement, the others left believing Wells planned to return later with another group.
Cole also emphasized that her son has fully cooperated with investigators and asked the public to avoid spreading rumors while the investigation remains ongoing.
