Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., (January 15,1929 – April 4, 1968), is one of the most notable civil rights activists, pastors, and freedom fighters this world has ever seen.
Dr. King was born and raised in Atlanta GA., and despite attending segregated K -12 schools, he honed in on his studies and graduated high school at the tender age of 15.
Dr. King was a very educated man who held multiple degrees that includes a B.A. from Morehouse College in 1948, a B.D that was awarded from Crozer Theological Seminary in 1951 , and a Doctorate from Boston University in 1955.
While in Boston, Dr. King met and married his beloved wife and lifetime partner Coretta Scott-King, who was also an activist and civil rights leader, plus had four children – Yolanda King Bernice King, Martin Luther King lll and Dexter King.
Dr King began his civil rights career as the pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church In Montgomery AL, and would later become a member of the executive committee of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
In December 1955, Dr. King extended his role as an activist by aiding in the first nonviolent demonstration by blacks in the United States; – a the bus boycott lasted 382 days until the Supreme Court declared the segregation laws unconstitutional on buses thus giving everyone equal riding rights.
Dr. King was also elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, travel endlessly to spread his message, protested with many groups and organizations across the world against prejudice, racial inequality, plus segregation, and wrote five books + countless articles of his teachings.
According to nobelprize.org, “At the age of thirty-five, Martin Luther King, Jr., was the youngest man to have received the Nobel Peace Prize. When notified of his selection, he announced that he would turn over the prize money of $54,123 to the furtherance of the civil rights movement.”
Dr. King’s message still resonates with many today as the world celebrates his life and legacy on January 15th, better known as Dr.Matin Luther King Jr. Day.
Activists from far and near all have come together to display acts of service and unity for their communities by organizing rallies, clean-ups, church services, giveaways, and much more.
By keeping Dr.Kings Message alive, the community is helping further his agenda and spread peace, love light, and equal rights!
